Created by New York University in partnership with a consortium of world-class universities and international tech companies, the was founded with the goal of making New York City a world capital of science and technology.

Interdisciplinary and progressive 

Based in Downtown Brooklyn, a thriving cultural hub and hot spot for startups and businesses, NYU CUSP strives to make cities stronger, fairer and more inclusive.

With the Big Apple as its testing ground, NYU CUSP collects data and information to draw insight on urban systems, and has become the world’s leading center of expertise in this growing field.

Graduate programs at NYU CUSP combine data science and analytics with urban management studies, while familiarizing students with the processes of city agencies.

 

Alumni work at technology and consulting institutions, startups and governmental agencies.

NYU CUSP graduates include a public information officer at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, a founding CEO of an urban science consulting firm, and data scientists at Bloomberg.

The Class of 2017 enjoyed a job placement rate of 85% within six months of graduation, and a high average starting salary of US$93,000.


Funding opportunities for international students

70% of NYU CUSP graduate students are international, with the Class of 2019 representing 18 different nationalities.

In addition to the financial aid issued by New York University, some funding opportunities are also offered exclusively for NYU CUSP students, including fellowships, paid internships and merit-based scholarships.

NYU CUSP is the first tenant at 370 Jay Street, a newly renovated, 530,000 square foot space in Downtown Brooklyn. CUSP's presence at 370 Jay Street marks an important milestone in strengthening NYU’s academic presence in Brooklyn and contribution to Brooklyn’s media, tech, and arts sectors.

“At CUSP, New York City is our laboratory and classroom. Having a central location in Downtown Brooklyn strengthens our ability to educate the next generation of data scientists and analytics experts who will improve our cities and daily life,” says Steven Koonin, Director of CUSP. “Working alongside other NYU programs devoted to media, art and technology at 370 Jay Street will help bridge the gap between these disciplines and strengthen our ability to develop systematic, data-driven initiatives in response to urban challenges, encompassing homelessness, congestion, noise, public transportation, and other quality of life issues.”

NYU CUSP students come from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds, from computer science and engineering to business and public policy. However, what they all share is a passion for applying analytical skills to problem-solving in an urban context.

As pioneers in the growing field of Urban Informatics, CUSP students are looking for a challenge, and want to make a difference in how people live, and improve the quality of life in cities.

CUSP's graduate programs  gives students the opportunity to tackle real-world problems in and out of the classroom, partnering with City and State organizations, including the New York City Economic Development Corporation and Department of Environmental Protection. Among the research projects CUSP has helped launch with its graduate students are the ongoing SONYC noise pollution research initiative that received $4.6 million in funding from the National Science Foundation, and a partnership with Women in Need to create the city’s first smart homeless shelters.

Admissions Overview

Your academic and professional experience need not be in a field directly linked to cities and urban issues. It is more important that you can demonstrate rigorous prior academic training and a passion for applying analytical skills to problem-solving in an urban context.

In addition to a strong academic record and test scores, successful applicants typically have an undergraduate or masters degree in science, mathematics, engineering, or in the social sciences, along with the aptitude and inspiration to apply quantitative and mathematics skills to the betterment of urban life. In the past, we have also had competitive applicants who have obtained these skills through online courses or work experience.

Firms are increasingly looking for data scientists and analytics experts to unlock the potential of their data. CUSP’s MS in Applied Urban Science and Informatics degree will prepare you to work in positions ranging from urban data scientist to management and leadership roles.

Numerous resources at NYU and through the CUSP network pave the way for many career opportunities after graduation. NYU CUSP offers technical and social workshops, networking and mentoring activities, research seminars, and workplace events to help students discover and customize a career path in the evolving industry of urban informatics. We also individually assist students in exploring internship and employment opportunities offered by NYU CUSP’s exclusive consortium of agency, corporate, and academic partners. Coupled with the resources provided by NYU’s Wasserman Center for Career Development, students have the unique ability to prepare for recruitment in both the public and private sectors.

If your interests are in entrepreneurship, you will have opportunities to develop the skills to manage and create new ventures and to foster innovation in the urban information and technology sectors. The program’s emphasis is on bridging theory and practice to learn how to transform ideas into new market opportunities and start-up ventures. To this end, entrepreneurial-minded students will have unique access to NYU’s incubators, the New York City venture capital community, and experts in starting and growing tech companies.
